DU Institute of Life Long Learning Likely To Be Decentralized

New Delhi: The Institute of Life Long Learning (ILLL) at the Delhi University (DU) will soon be decentralized. The reason is that smaller versions of the learning centre, which will be located in 12 colleges are about to be set up. The decentralization of the centre is being taken as a step that will make learning a more interactive process between the students as well as the teachers. Currently, the institute has only two centres, one each in the north and south campuses.

As per sources, the ILLL came into existence in the year 2007. The main purpose is to provide additional study material and tools for students of the Delhi University. It has an online portal that includes e-content for about 12 subjects, such as e-lectures, e-quizzes, e-lessons, e-labs, etc. DU Vice Chancellor Dinesh Singh has said that establishing smaller versions of the ILLL in DU colleges would mean utilizing connectivity in all ways, whether it is connecting minds, or institutions. He said that it will be a two-way learning procedure where students will be giving their inputs on the provision of the learning material.

Moreover, the 12 colleges where the ILLL centres will be set up are yet to be finalized. These will be chosen on the basis of the competence of the college with respect to information and communication technology along with their ability to provide additional inputs to the institute. The chosen colleges will also be influential in involving the students in the procedure of content creation. The creation of content for several subjects requires manpower and also costs a lot of money. It had been decided that students from computer science will be involved in helping upload the e-content on the portal and will also be paid for it.

Also, the ILLL has planned to upload content on its portals that will be for foreign students, allowing them to obtain a degree from DU online. A step in this direction that has already been taken is by the School of Open Learning that runs a pan-Africa e-network. Students from six countries in Africa can access online lectures in two certificate programmes of the university, accounting and communication skills. The students are awarded DU certificates on completion of these courses.

MUHS Opts for Q-Bank Method To Set Papers

Mumbai: Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), which sets the syllabus and supervises admissions to all MBBS, ayurvedic, homeopathic and other medical colleges across the state, has decided to prepare a database of questions to randomly set papers. The university wants to have database of questions for medical exams to avoid mistakes, paper leaks and ensure a foolproof method. Also, the selection of questions would be based on random selection through computerized software.

As per sources, the move has come after the MUHS higher-ups decided to introduce some examination changed to make the procedure of paper setting more transparent and free of mistakes. As a part of this process, MUHS has asked heads of all departments to prepare a bank of questions for all subjects that will be made available online or in a CD and the question paper would be set from this set of questions.

Dr Arun Jamkar, Dean of MUHS, has said that the idea is still in a discussion stage, but once all departments agree, the process would not take long to implement. In addition, he has said that every time during exams they face the embarrassment of silly mistakes in question papers. Sometimes questions come from old syllabus or out of syllabus etc. He said that these are human errors and their possibility will always remain if the process of paper setting is manual. He added that this is the reason why they want the exam paper setting to be computerized, so that chances of errors are eliminated. He added that the selection of questions would be based on random selection through computerized software.

It is anticipated that besides mistakes in question papers, paper leaks would also be reduced as the question paper would be prepared just a day before examinations and sent to all exam centres. Dr Jamkar has also added that currently, professors are involved in setting of papers. He said that though there are no questions of leaks, mentality is such that papers can be leaked. Here, the selection of questions would be random and no one would know.

IIT- B PhD Students To Get a First-Hand Industry Experience

Mumbai: The Indian Institute of Technology- Bombay (IIT-B) has decided to introduce internships for its PhD students from the coming academic session. The decision has been taken with the purpose to expose students to the industry and to make them market-ready. In addition, a post graduate (PG) internship cell has also been set up to coordinate all the activities in this regard.

According to a survey conducted by senior doctoral students, almost 90 % of the institute’s PhD students had said ‘industrial collaborations through internships’ should be included in the PhD programme to improve academic and research output. Also, following the findings, a proposal was mooted around four months back and was approved last week. However, internships for MTech students is currently under consideration.

VSK Murthy Balijepalli, general secretary, Academic affairs, post graduate programmes, IIT Bombay has said that the institute, so far, had practical training or internship for its Btech students. However, there was no formal system of internship for the PG students. The PG students were allowed to go for exchange programmes in universities abroad or they would mostly work on the research projects coming to the institute through the Industrial Research and Consultancy Centre (IRCC) under their respective thesis guide’s supervision. But the whole system was very adhoc.
